Q: What factors influenced your decision to pursue veterinary medicine as a career?
A: Similar to the majority of applicants, I had a passion for animals and science. Not a very exciting story for sure, but it was definitely a calling for me.
Q: What did you like about attending Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine?
A: It was my in-state school and close to home. When I was feeling stressed out, I could drive home in just a few hours. Also, I went to veterinary school in a very different time. We had a small class size and I felt like I got to know the faculty really well. They were a great influence on me.
Q: What would be an interview question you would like to ask an applicant applying to veterinary school?
A: Tell me something about you that has nothing to do with veterinary medicine. What do you do for fun or hobby? What gets you excited about life?
Q: How did you make yourself stand out as an applicant?
A: Interesting question. Now that I am Director of Admissions, I now know we all looked the same on paper. Our experiences were no different than another applicant. For me, I think it was my interview. I am an extrovert and I am sure they were mesmerized by my articulate conversation. No, really, I love to talk to people and am very comfortable in interview situations.
Q: What are you passionate about in terms of my specialty and as Director of Admissions?
A: I was a mixed animal practitioner prior to becoming director and I love working with cows, they are just great. I love being outdoors and being challenged by the weather and circumstances. As Director of Admissions, I love being around passionate, young people who I know will be shaping the profession in the future. I get quite choked up at graduation seeing all of those mature veterinarians who just four short years ago, walked into class for the first time. It is just an awesome experience. Hey, don’t tell my students that I get emotional.
Q: What do you want the attendees to leave with after your panel presentation?
A: That regardless of the program they apply to, that they leave with the tools necessary to prepare for the variety of interview formats.
