Q: What factors influenced your decision to pursue veterinary medicine as a career?
A: I always knew that I wanted to do something in the medical field, but it wasn't until I had an opportunity to experience veterinary medicine that I knew that is where I wanted to be. It was a feeling of fulfillment at the end of each day and excitement for the next that reeled me in and still does.
Q: What did you like about attending University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine?
A: Every veterinary school curriculum does the best they can to prepare their students to be ready when they get into the real world. UF did that for me and for all of my classmates. The part that you don't realize right away is that it's not just the knowledge you obtain but the friendships that you develop over those 4 years that what keeps you afloat through your career.
Q: What advice would you offer a pre-veterinary student interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine or in your specific specialty?
A: My one piece of advice is to take the time to experience what this field really is all about. Essentially, what does it mean to carry Doctor in front of your name. There is this constant feeling of insurmountable responsibility that comes with being a veterinarian. It is the respect for that responsibility that drove me to seek further education in avian medicine. I am dedicated to knowing as much as I can to make the best decisions possible for my patients.
Q: How did you make yourself stand out as an applicant to veterinary school?
A: I have no idea how I got in. What I did when I was applying was that I wanted to be a veterinarian without question. My game plan was if the first time didn't work, I would seek critique on how to better my application and work hard to surpass those expectations.
Q: What are you passionate about in terms of your specialty in avian medicine?
A: Birds are awesome. I can't think of any other patient that will sing and dance with you in the middle of the day without judgement. On a more serious note, what we know about avian medicine is constantly expanding. The minute you think you know what is going on, you realize you don't. Its a daily reminder of the necessity for even more research and a better understanding on how to promote an excellent quality of life in all of the species encompassed in the avian specialty. I am excited to be a part of all of it.
Q: What do you want the attendees to leave with after your presentation at the conference this October?
A: I hope they leave with a clearer knowledge of what the veterinary profession is like and empowered to pursue what makes them excited about life.
Don't miss the opportunity to meet Dr. Murphy at the conference on Sunday, October 11 at 11:00 am and at the Zoo/Wildlife/Exotic/Avian Meet Up at 5:00 pm!
